The Capture of "Evelyn"

Evelyn being fired by the 2nd Battery Vermont Light Artillery This was our major problem, the dreaded Yankee 12-lb. Napoleon which had massacred us at Troy with canister shot.   Her name is "Evelyn" and she bites!

The brothers Peden (Jim and Ray) sally forth to draw the Yankees attention away from the tree line in the distance, where the 7th Tennessee lay in wait.  We are outnumbered, but the Yankees are overconfident and take the field with their guard down. Hold 'em off, boys!

Save the Battle Flag!

Trooper Dana is down, but Cpl. Keator grabs the battle flag while Troopers Jack Anderson and Ray Peden reload.

The 7th Tennesse captures Evelyn
Capture!
The Harris Rifles have taken Evelyn and her gun crew prisoner, and are hauling it back to our lines, complete with limber and ammunition.  Now the tide has turned!

Loading the Napoleon
Load and Fire!
Revenge is sweet, as the Napoleon is loaded with canister grape
and fired at short range directly into the Federal infantry lines.
  Remember Troy!

Take some of your own medicine, Billy!

Mourning the dead
The devastation is total.  Cpl. Keator and Trooper Anderson check for life among the brave lads of the Yankee Infantry.  There is none.  A lone Yankee Padre walks the field, administering last rites as all mourn the carnage of this bloody conflict.

Dedicating the Bonnie Blue After the battle, we return to camp, where our new Bonnie Blue flag is dedicated to the sound of "Bonnie Blue" being played by Trooper Ray on his fife.

The Sequel

Yes, the Yankees later mounted a counterattack and re-captured their beloved Evelyn, turning it again to our lines and vaporizing the 1st Virginia Cavalry.  Still, our spirits will not long forget this great event and we give a heavenly "huzzah" to Pat and Karen Pulver and the others of the 2nd Battery Vermont Light Artillery who worked so hard to make such a memorable experience.

Thanks, Yanks!
