Photo Essay: Journal of a Confederate Recruit.
This is the one which started it all, that is, the experience at Orwell, Vermont which
brought the Peden Family ( which includes your beloved webmaster ) into the world of Civil
War reenacting. It was our daughter, Rachael ( Now Trooper Ray ) who first tasted
the fun of slaughtering a pile of blue-bellies, then dying for Old Virginia and the cause.
Troy,
New York - I would have taken
more photos here, except for the unfortunate interruption from the DamYankee 2nd Battery
Vermont Light Artillery, which took out 80% of our 1st Virginia line with a single shot of
canister grape from their handsome 12 pound Napoleon brass cannon. Guess you can't
win 'em all...
Chatham, New York
- To the best of anyone's recent memory, there has never been a reenactment event where a
Federal cannon was captured and then turned against the Bluecoats with live fire.
Truth is, no Artillery Company on earth would logically turn over a $50,000 authentic
Civil War 12 pound Napoleon to a group of untrained cavalry and infantry from the other
side. Yet, it happened at Chatham ( after some early morning training on the gun and
with assistance from the Battery who donned Rebel garb to supervise the affair.) We
are indebted to the Yankee event sponsors who thunk up this fantastic scenario and
permitted us to man their beautiful Napoleon, named "Evelyn". It was a
truly memorable event for all of the 1st Vermont Cavalry and the 7th Tennessee Volunteer
Infantry (Harris Rifles) who actually captured the gun. |
